JOIN TRACK CHIC SISTERHOOD
for a memorable day as we join forces with Cody Unser First Step Foundation (CUFSF), Championship Auto Racing Auxiliaries (CARA), Offshore Super Series Power Boat Racing Association (OSS), Peppers Racing and the INDY 500 FESTIVAL PARADE to raise research funds and public awareness for those afflicted with Transverse Myletis and all forms of spinal cord-related paralysis.
It’s going to be a blast as Track Chic members, up-and-coming female drivers, military veterans, Peppers Offshore Racing Team, and of course, our male hosts, the LUG NUTS, kick-off the Indy Weekend as the IRL 500 Festival Parade celebrates 53 years of tradition at noon on Saturday, May 29th. Enjoy being part of the pageantry, larger-than-life floats, and all 33 starting drivers as we share our campaign with the 300,000 spectators lining the parade route!
TRACK CHIC LIVE will broadcast the event with RaceFanRadio.com. The parade will also be telecast live on WISH-TV 8 and on VERSUS Cable Network!
Cody Unser, daughter of racing legend Al Unser, JR. and Shelley Unser, founded the Cody Unser First Step Foundation to work with disabled veterans and others with spinal injuries and utilizes scuba dving as an effective means of both physical and mental rehabilitation. The Paralyzed Veterans Association (PVA) has partnered with CUFSF to bring Adaptive Scuba to disabled veterans.
The party continues after the Parade with an "Operation Deep Down" Dive Tank demonstration! Here’s your chance to make a difference. Together we can raise much needed awareness and funding for stem cell research and a better understanding of what it means living with paralysis while trying to stay healthy!
Cody Unser’s Story
In the late afternoon of Friday, February 5, 1999, Cody Unser, daughter of racing legend Al Unser, Jr. and Shelley Unser, was at 6th grade basketball practice in Albuquerque when she began to feel excessively tired, had difficulty catching her breath, developed a pounding headache and her legs felt heavy, numb and “tingly.” She was taken to the emerg ency room at Presbyterian Hospital and sent home after evaluation.
The next morning, Feb. 6, Cody was unable to walk and returned to the hospital, paralyzed below her chest. The mysterious symptoms were finally diagnosed as Transverse Myelitis, a rare but often paralyzing -- and sometimes fatal -- spinal cord inflammation.
It was April 1999 before Cody returned home, paralyzed and in a wheelchair but energized in her quest to build awareness of TM, promote cooperation among researchers and cure paralysis.
Testimony to the creative spirit of people with disabilities, Cody has also become a certified scuba diver, formed the Cody Unser First Step foundation with the help of NASCAR star Bobby Labonte. A testimony to her dedication and determination, Cody serves as an advocate for stem cell research, has lobbied Congress, introduced rock and roll stars, paired up with the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation to sponsor Cody’s Great Scuba Adventure, and more. Her accomplishments and activities have won national acclaim, including the Declaration of February 5th as Cody Unser Day by the Legislature of the State of New Mexico.
Cody and her foundation have been featured in People magazine, on CBS 48 Hours and has appeared continuously in other national, regional, local and trade media.
The Foundation will also address the cause, rehabilitation, prevention and cure for Transverse Myelitis, and freely affiliate with other medical, charitable and corporate entities to achieve these goals.
Championship Auto Racing Auxiliary (CARA) was founded in 1981 to serve the professional auto racing community through charitable work and to promote the friendships of those involved in the Motorsports family.
CARA Charities occupies a special place in the Motorsports community. Since its founding, CARA has donated more than $4 million dollars to dozens of philanthropic causes helping children, hospitals, scholarship funds, ministries and numerous charitable foundations.
CARA is also about community. It is the racing family giving of itself, not only in dollars, but in contributions of self. Over the course of the year, members have frequent volunteer opportunities to work and make an impact in the lives of others. Combined with the dedicated support of its sponsors and the racing community, CARA enters its second quarter-century of giving as a leading Motorsports charity.
Offshore Super Series Power Boat Racing Association (OSS)
The OSS is a not for profit association dedicated to the advancement of the further development and growth of offshore powerboat racing in North America.
OSS Cares represents the humanitarian hearts of the OSS Family and is a way of demonstrating the commitment OSS has to the communities visited during race season.
